May 2010 - Environmentally Friendly Works
Pocklington Beck flows through Pocklington, North Yorkshire utilizing man-made culverts for much of its length under the town centre. This means that it flows under homes, businesses and roads and therefore is a flooding risk. Over time, gravel and silt from higher up the beck, along with other rubble, has found its way into the watercourse and collected in the culverts.
Following flooding in the town in July 2007, the Environment Agency carried out an exploration of the culverts by CCTV to identify the flooding risks.
Following analysis of the CCTV footage Aquajet GB teamed up with EA in Pocklington, to remove almost 150 tonnes of silt, gravel and rubble that has built up in the beck system under Pocklington.
During the process we encountered the added complexity of discovering a rare species of Native white-clawed Crayfish. In order to preserve this species we had to, in a controlled fashion, manage the extraction of the invasive American signal crayfish that act as a predator to the white-clawed crayfish.
The TV footage from the site where press were keen to pick up on the extensive works Aquajet (GB) Ltd, in partnership with the Environment Agency, to both protect the environment from flooding as well as saving this endangered species.
